On-site Mini-Walks

Organize your school, group, or church to help make a difference by sponsoring a Mini-Walk

Since 1988, the Help the Homeless Program has raised nearly $70 million for 200-plus homeless service providers in the Washington metropolitan area. Each year, tens of thousands of people join together to participate in Help the Homeless walks to support organizations dedicated to serving homeless people.

The mini-walks primarily engage young people. However, teachers, staff, parents, and other adults connected to the schools and organizations hosting the walks are welcome to register and participate.

All schools (elementary, middle, junior high and high schools), community-based organizations, and faith-based groups in the Washington metropolitan area may hold mini-walks.  Student groups -such as a choir or a soccer team- are not eligible to host mini-walks.   Students are also encouraged to participate in the Walkathon on the National Mall.

Mini-Walk Details

A mini-walk must be held on the sponsoring organization's property during regular operating hours. The youth registration
fee is $15.00 (age 25 and younger) and adult registration fee
is $25.00.  All youth and adults who register and pay the full
fee will receive a Fannie Mae Help the Homeless T-shirt.
Youth or adults participating in mini-walks who would like to
buy a T-shirt but cannot pay the entire registration fee can
purchase a T-shirt for $5.

Organizations interested in holding a mini-walk must:

  • Send the commitment form to Wesley Housing’s mini-walk coordinator by October 22, 2011 (this will register your mini-walk with Fannie Mae).
  • Assign an adult coordinator, who will act as the Help the Homeless Program liaison and information contact person.
  • Hold and supervise the mini-walk on the organization's property between Tuesday, July 1, 2011, and Sunday, November 6, 2011.
  • Submit all registration forms and monies to the mini-walk coordinator at least 8 days in advance of the walk to ensure all T-Shirts will be received in time.
  • Conduct a mini-walk program lasting 30 minutes or longer, with at least 15 minutes consisting of some form of physical activity (e.g., a walk down a predetermined route or planned activities during a physical education class).

In addition, students will be engaged in an educational presentation that raises awareness about homelessness.

If you are interested in organizing a mini-walk with your school or organization, please contact Wesley Housing’s Mini-Walk Coordinator, Amanda House ahouse@whdc.org / 703-642-3830 x224.
