The reviews are in and the money is counted.The first-ever Spring Kick! was a great triumph on both counts. With $25,187 in proceeds, the event at Great Country Farms in Bluemont introduced Wesley Housing to new audiences and offered a day of music, food, and fun for families. Participants, venue staff, and community volunteers were in agreement about the day’s success.

A big round of applause for the Gold Sponsors: Hamel Builders, Inc.; Klein Horning LLP; and Great Country Farms. Also thanks to all the other area companies and individuals who supported the event through sponsorships. The list of silver and bronze sponsors is below.

Musical entertainment included area favorite bluegrass band Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen as well as Morningside, Jake and the Burtones, and Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians. Dancers from the Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers, Boyle School of Irish Dance, and Celtic Rhythm School of Dance kicked up their heels. Round Hill Arts Center coordinated
The Meaning of Home
, a children’s art show, and Harmony United Methodist Church offered a youth education program on the issue of homelessness. Jeff Stern, manager of the Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center, volunteered as sound tech and served as emcee along with Wesley Housing intern Paula Chhim.

Auctioneers Craig and Brian Damewood encouraged bidders to kick in more money for the great getaway auction packages. The finale was a one week resort vacation in Historic Williamsburg donated by longtime supporters Nancy and Lyle Minter. Thanks to all the folks who bid and made a purchase, the auction raised $1,375.

In addition to the musical entertainment, Spring Kick! kidsvisited with the barnyard animals, fished in the pond, and experienced an amazing outdoor jumping pillow of air. Ultimately, many families chose to kick back and just enjoy the 200-acre working farm’s country setting, barbecue buffet, and entertainment.

A final thanks to the Spring Kick! Committee—Phil Kemelor, George Kostel, Nancy Minter, and Beth Pautler—for helping kick off this inaugural event.

Resounding Response to Call for Holiday Supplies,
Volunteers, and Adopt-A-Family Partners

Once again, Wesley Housing worked to make the season bright for families in our affordable housing communities. We participated in the annual Toys for Tots drive to supply gifts for the children and youth in our communities. And we solicited donations of gift cards for our teenagers.

Through our Adopt-A-Family Program, Wesley Housing partnered with local businesses, houses of worship, and individuals to offer holiday help for some of the neediest families in our communities. By providing household goods, food, gifts, winter clothing, etc, we helped lighten their economic burden so that they can enjoy the holiday. This year, we expanded our program to serve 102 individuals and families, a 30% increase over our outreach of last year.

During the weeks of December 8th and December 15th, volunteers lead by Amanda House, Wesley Housing's Volunteer and Community Partnerships Manager, wrapped hundreds of gifts and delivered them all to thankful children and their families. Our thanks to all of those who gave the gift of time to help with our holiday gift drives, community celebrations, and present deliveries and to the individuals and businesses whose generous donations made it all possible.

For more information on how you can volunteer with Wesley Housing, please contact Amanda House, Volunteer and Community Partnerships Manager, at ahouse@whdc.org or 703.642.3830, ext. 224.

Wesley Housing's Operation Warm-Up a Success!

Wesley Housing collected new and lightly used winter clothing items for K-5th graders: Winter Coats, Earmuffs, Gloves, Hats, Scarves, Socks, etc. Help keep the children of Wesley Housing's Community Resource Centers in Northern Virginia and those at Plummer Elementary School in Southeast DC warm this winter.

In 2010/2011, we distributed 1,620 pieces collected by our Operation Warm-Up! partners. Thanks to all who shared the gift of warmth!

Wesley Housing Staff, Volunteers Deliver Holiday Meals

Sixty individuals and families across our Wesley Housing communities found Thanksgiving a little more filling this year. Our thanks to NBC's Food For Families drive and the staff and volunteers from Wesley Housing who picked up and then delivered the tasty fixings for a special holiday meal.

ParcView Celebration A Success

Congressman Jim Moran, Mayor Bill Euille, and others from housing, finance and the affordable housing industry joined Wesley Housing staff and our partners to celebrate this victory in the City of Alexandria. Partners Honoring the 35th Anniversary
of the United Methodist Church's Urban Consultation

“We can't solve the whole problem, but we can make a vital contribution.”

~Urban Consultation, April 1974

1974 An Urban Consultation, planned by the Special Concerns Committee of the Northern Virginia United Methodist Board of Missions, was held at Arlington United Methodist Church for participants interested in programs that would meet practical human needs. While visiting local housing properties, members of the Consultation's Housing Task Force repeatedly came face to face with sub-standard housing and reported a severe housing shortage, especially for low-income people.  Overall, they found:

  • A rural white population displaced by suburban expansion;
  • African-American communities with dismal physical conditions;
  • Families moving to Northern Virginia for jobs, but unable to find housing;
  • Families with housing, paying 50% or more of their income for rent;
  • Seniors and low-income families displaced by condo conversions;
  • Physically disabled and chronically ill people unable to work;
  • Women providing the sole support of small children;
  • People who lost housing due to fire, housing code enforcement, evictions, or other public action.

Tasked with translating abstract "caring" into plans for constructive action, the Housing Task Force ultimately recommended the creation of a flexible housing development corporation that would function freely to meet local housing needs. In response, Virginia Peters, retired school teacher and task force co-chair, founded Wesley Housing Development Corporation, funded by local, state, and federal government; private foundations and individual donors; donated property; and church funds. 2009 Businesses, Foundations, Government, Individuals, and the Faith Community are still pursuing that mission to provide decent affordable housing by supporting Wesley Housing.  To date, we have developed 23 communities in 6 localities, changing the lives of over 15,000 Northern Virginians. Despite these gains, however, many of those findings still hold true and families, seniors, and those living with chronic disease or disability simply cannot find a place to live. With an economy in turmoil and homelessness on the rise, it is paramount that we still be willing to help those who are truly in need.

To honor that Urban Consultation and those every day citizens who dared to make a contribution to solving this widespread problem, we ask that you once again demonstrate your commitment to the belief that affordable housing should be a basic right of every member of our community.
