HUD Selects Whitefield Commons for $188 K The largest program grant in Wesley Housing's history was awarded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The "Drug Elimination Grant" initiative will be implemented at Whitefield Commons and Knightsbridge Apartments, in Arlington, Virginia. The grant is designed to promote public safety and reduce drug-related crime through a comprehensive program of physical improvements, drug education, and supportive services and activities which provide meaningful alternatives to drug involvement. Planned physical improvements including new fencing, lighting, landscaping, and security systems. Drug education programs will be offered in partnership with Arlington County, as well as computer skills training, adult education, employment services linkages, and ESL classes. Activities for youth will include Homework Help, 4-H membership, and reading programs. Programs to be delivered in partnership with other local organizations are the planned Teen Leadership Development Program, martial arts training, and family support services. "We believe this grant from HUD acknowledges the effectiveness of the integrated model of care we offer our residents," commented Zack Bumpus, Wesley Housing Board of Directors Chairman. "By improving our properties, providing education and training, and offering alternative activities, we can also improve the lives of our residents."
