Residents, Neighbors Gather for Food, Games, Resources

Wesley Housing hosts community day at Wexford Manor

Alexandria, VA—Wesley Housing Development Corporation hosted a Community Day at Wexford Manor Apartments in Falls Church, VA, July 25, 2008.  Over 100 residents from the affordable housing community and their neighbors gathered to build relationships and learn more about resources and programs offered at the Wexford Manor Community Resource Center (CRC) and in the surrounding area.

Wesley Housing worked with local agencies and government to pull together an event that would address the physical, social, and educational needs of the residents, targeting healthcare, community resources, and educational opportunities.

“By partnering with other agencies, we can more effectively meet the needs of our residents,” stated Shelley Murphy, Wesley Housing’s CEO.  “There are people here today who have learned about health care resources for their families and gathered necessary supplies for the coming school year.”

AMERIGROUP Community Care, together with FAMIS, provided information on accessing healthcare and helped residents assess their insurance needs.  Fairfax County’s Department of Family Services supplied their Programs and Services Guide, and Cox Communications handed out school supplies.

Wesley Housing staff were on hand to answer questions about the Wexford Manor CRC, which offers residents and members of the surrounding community After-School and summer youth development programs, computer instruction for youth and adults, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes free of charge.

Food, games, contests, and a raffle drawing framed the afternoon.  Children who lined up at the Face Painting Station left transformed into comic book characters, animals, rainbows, and more.  Participants also got a chance to remember the day by visiting a Photo Station to pose for pictures with their friends and families.

Rita’s Italian Ice topped off the day by giving away cool delights for all.
