Wesley Housing Development Corporation (WHDC) is an award-winning, nonprofit housing developer, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Wesley Housing's mission is to develop, own, operate, preserve, and maintain affordable housing and sustain quality communities for low-and moderate-income persons in Northern Virginia.
TITLE: Community Partnerships Intern
REPORTS TO: Amanda House, Volunteer & Community Partnerships Manager
HOURS / SCHEDULE: COMPENSATION:
35 hours/week (Monday-Thursday) for 8 weeks $11/hour paid on a bi-weekly basis
Beginning June 2, 2008 (Total compensation= $3,080*)
(Note: schedule and start date are negotiable) *Income will be subject to FICA and income taxes
GOALS & OUTCOMES OF THE POSITION:
Wesley Housing’s 2008 Community Partnerships Internship will focus on Outreach and Communications--impacting the organization’s resource development and resident services goals and objectives for 2008. The program will:
- Provide Intern with experience in a nonprofit organization and allow him/her to gain a better understanding of the nonprofit sector.
- Allow Intern to gain professional-level experience that may be built upon through further coursework and future experience.
- Allow Intern to complete quality work that will have a true impact on low- to moderate-income residents of Northern Virginia.
EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- Intern must be a full-time undergraduate student.
- Intern should be able to write at a professional-level.
- Intern must have own transportation.
- Intern will be reimbursed for any mileage used due to work-related projects and activities.
- Coursework that may help prepare Intern for the position:
- Marketing, Communications, Public Administration, Business Administration, Sociology, Psychology, English, Counseling, Human Services, and other similar majors/concentrations.
- Experience that may help prepare Intern for position:
- Special Events Planning, Community/Campus Involvement and Leadership, Project Management, Time Management, Public Speaking, Tutoring, Mentoring, etc.
SUMMER PROJECTS & PROGRAMS:
The projects and programs Intern will work on may include, but are not limited to:
- Volunteer Management project:
- Organize an action plan to help recruit and activate new volunteers for the organization that will allow the Resident Services Department to continue to provide quality programs to children and adults at little or no cost. (Example: High School and College/University students and groups; Church and community groups; individual volunteers)
- Define Volunteer activities for Senior properties
- Plan and implement Summer 2008 “Help the Homeless” outreach efforts
- Develop new interactive, educational presentation(s) geared to children and teens.
- Design an activity for one day of Summer Camp.
- Conduct research regarding affordable housing and homelessness in DC-metro area and nationwide, and use for presentation development.
- Conduct outreach to new and past community partners (including at least one Adopt-A-Center partner).
- Organize school-supply drive for students of Plummer Elementary School & WHDC Community Resource Centers
- Seek donations
- Create flyers
- Organize various projects to benefit the residents of Wesley Housing, examples could include:
- Plan at least two events for residents (one family-oriented and one senior-oriented)
- Project design of choice
